This babe is a YouTube sensation, if you haven’t heard about her yet, you have been living under a rock – get out and watch her stunning and refreshing make-up tutorials! I honestly didn’t realise she was kiwi-based initially, with the insane amount of followers she has, I just assumed she was anchored in a larger, far-off land, with one of those blended accents, with a hint of kiwi. But alas, how proud was I to discover she was based right here in NZ!
Shaaanxo is New Zealand’s most subscribed YouTube channel. I love her really down to earth, authentic approach, with some really achievable make-up tutorials and some of her vlogs are just plain fun to watch.
It was such a privilege to ask the incredibly talented Shannon a few quick questions, and find out a bit more about her top tips and her day to day routine.
When did you know you wanted to carve a career out of vlogging in the beauty industry? How did you get your start?
I didn’t! It was basically a happy accident. I began my channel simply to meet other people out there who were interested in beauty and makeup, like I was. None of my friends at the time were in to makeup, so I used the platform to connect with other people. I didn’t even know you could make a career out of YouTube, but I’m happy I stumbled in to it!
You have achieved incredible success on a global scale, what are you most proud of with your achievements to date?
Starting my own brand, xoBeauty. Having my own successful line of beauty accessories, plus being able to provide jobs within New Zealand is pretty cool!
Do you have a “can’t live without it “ beauty product and does it go with you everywhere?
One of them is currently Hurraw Lip Balm. I have probably 20 of them lying around my room, car, desk…. they’re natural and amazing on your lips and skin in general. Perfect for winter.
Where do you find inspiration for your Vlogs?
From my viewers normally. I get thousands of requests for certain looks, or certain brands, or to use certain products every single week, so I just choose a few and roll with it.
Who is your style icon?
I don’t really have one! I have always just worn what I feel good in. I can admire other peoples style, but I never really catch on.
What is the biggest beauty trend you expect to see over summer?
Dewy skin, freckles and bright lips!
Do you have a top “make-up tip” or piece of advice that can apply to anyone?
If you’re in a hurry and want to feel put-together, just chuck on some mascara and lip balm. These simple and quick steps really brighten your face up with almost no effort, and don’t forget to smile
Many people underestimate the amount of work that goes in to vlogging, pulling together content, shooting, editing etc – how many hours of work/prep goes in to one vlog?
It really depends what the video is! Usually, if I spend an hour and a half shooting a video, I’ll spend another hour and a half *at least* editing it. It also takes me 30-60 minutes to prepare for filming too! Then, loads of time uploading and sharing and replying to the comments as well, which is the super rewarding part!
What is the most annoying question you can ask a beauty vlogger?
‘What are you going to do after YouTube?’
Describe what you love most about your job?
My viewers and the friends I have made. Most of my current friends are people I have met through YouTube, one way or another. I just adore my viewers, I love hearing their stories and communicating with them on social media. It’s so lovely to feel the support personally, and also know that you are making someone else smile with your videos and content.
What do you do to relax?
Lie in bed with a good TV series and face mask, and play with my pups.
If you weren’t a rock-star vlogger, you would be a __________?
I reckon I would be working in PR or Advertising! I love the nature of it all and find it super interesting…. I guess I kind of use it within my current job to an extent.
